Area International POPular Group

I've been asked several times to upload videos by some Italian progressive bands. Sincerely I'm not a big fan of that scene, most of the musicians were trying just to imitate the sound of the British bands. Area (International POPular Group) were definetly something different and really innovative. With a big campaign in 1973 the indipendent label Cramps announced them as the first group of "radical music"...and their music was a caustic blend of rock, free jazz, atonal avantgarde and mediterranean folk. But what really made the difference was the powerful, ductile, unbelievable voice of Demetrio Stratos. Unfortunately this is a short clip of an instrumental track, the only Area's video I found. Demetrio is just playing the keyboards in this noisy version of the socialist international workers' hymn. Area were also a political band...I won't even try to describe the clime of social and political tension in my country during the seventies...let's just say that Area were a stimulating and controversial band in a stimulating and controversial period. This little video will prove how good they were as musicians and how uncompromising was their music.
Area ended with the end of the seventies, it was impossible to continue after Demetrio's death, for leukaemia, in 1979.

Thanx for your labour!

I think that many italian progressive bands were boring, so boring as the spanish or english monster progressive bands of that age.

I´ve always prefer the 60s italian material, i´ve ripped some italian 60s perfomances from bands like Equipe 84, Primitives or I Corvi. You can find in the P2P with my nickname - kinkman.

P.D: I think you´ve not upload this file correctly, the file have got 0 kb extension.

Ciao!

Hi Kinkman, I know your blog, it's a pleasure to meet you here...I think I found on Soulseek a clip by I Corvi that it's been ripped by you...
The Area's video is uploaded correctly, the first file you find on Rapidshare is a small .txt file that tells you where to download it...

Ciao ;-)

Thanks for Area Mirco.
I discovered Area some months ago and was deeply impressed with Demetrio's kind of singing. Unfortunately, there is no singing here, but it's still very interseting to see them all.
Thanks again...

Demetrios (I think he had a greek origin, right?) was really something. Such impressive vocal capability is quiet rare. He was able to produce two sounds at the same time, with a technique that he mastered himself. It's such a pity that he ended up like that.

Thanks for the video!

You are right, he had Greek origins. That vocal technique was called "diplofonia"

Thank you for your comment.

I love Stormy Six, the early Alan Sorrenti and Stratos' solo works...also Claudio Rocchi, the early Franco Battiato, Aktuala, Opus Avantra...but it is very difficult to find video by these artists...

I've been listening to Area for nearly 25 years. An amazing band. Unfortunately, the clip is no longer available since no one has downloaded it in a while.
